Reception Woodpeckers

Problem solving week in Maths saw children working in pairs to build little snail a house according to some very specific criteria!

Summer 2 - Week 7

 

We are nearing the end of our year and we have lots to look forward to still! Last week we had our final Reception trip to Ashridge, the weather played nicely and the children had a superb trip.

This week in maths we will be problem solving again, although the focus shifts to number problems rather than the arty snail house focus we had last week!

In phonics we will be revising all the sounds we have learnt this year - mainly the digraphs and trigraphs.

Our topic focus for the week will be the seaside, with children being given opportunities to share their own seaside experiences.

Summer 2 - Week 6

This week in phonics children will be learning the difference between the oi and oy digraphs.

Its all about problem solving in maths as children work in pairs to build a house for little snail according to some very specific criteria! Next they will make a friend and then a plate of party food for the snails.

Our literacy focus for the week will be Peter Pan.

During Topic in the afternoons we will be learning all about water and where it comes from :)

 

 

Eid Mubarak to all our Muslim families! We have all been learning about this special holiday and even making Eid food from playdough!

Summer 2 - Week 4

This week in phonics we will be revisiting previously learnt digraphs ng and ue.

In Maths we will be revisiting time and building on our prior knowledge of o'clock and half past using analogue clocks.

Our topic theme for the week is the Olympics - quite fitting seeing as its our Sports day on Friday :)

Summer 2 - Week 3

Welcome to Spanish Week! This week the children are going to be completely immersed in all things Spanish and we have the best information sources - our Spanish teachers!

In maths, we will be learning how to compose and decompose numbers to 20.

In phonics, we will be learning the 'ear' trigraph and writing words and sentences with this trigraph.

Literacy Focus for the week is Don Quijote.

The Woodpeckers made some wonderful 'Under the sea' holiday projects - such creative little souls :)

Summer 2 - Week 1

 

Welcome back to all the Woodpeckers, it was so lovely to see such happy, smiling faces on the playground yesterday morning!

This week in phonics we will be revisiting all the diagraphs we have learnt so far as well as learn a new trigraph - air.

In Maths we will be learning how to sort data into venn diagrams.

In topic, we will be learning all about oceans and seas as well as pirates.

Our literacy focus for the week will be The night pirates.

Summer 1 - Week 6

 

And we are on to the final stretch up to our half term break, well done to all the Woodpeckers for all their hard work and enthusiasm this half term, your holidays are well deserved!

This week in phonics we will be revisiting all the diagraphs we have learnt so far this term(ie, er, ou, ow, ue).

In Maths we will be using and applying our knowledge to solving mathematical investigations with real life contexts.

In topic, we will be learning all about diurnal and nocturnal animals.

Our literacy focus for the week will be Mr Tiger Goes Wild.

Giant cockroaches, stick insects, African snails, millipedes and snakes - we have them all at school, thanks to a visit fromZoolab!

The rainy weather did not stop the Woodpeckers from learning how to play a game of rounders in PE. Children showed great team spirit and much fun was had by everyone!

Summer 1 - Week 4

This week in Reception we will be learning the following:

  • In maths, we will be learning about the value of money. 
  • In phonics, we will be learning all about the ie sound.  Children will practise segmenting and blending words with this sound as well as writing sentences with these words in.
  • During our afternoon topic sessions this week we are learning all about animals, their skin and fur as well as similarities and differences between animals.
  • Our literacy focus for the week will be The Tiger that came to tea.

Summer 1 - Week 3

This week in Reception we will be learning the following:

  • In maths, we will be learning how to measure distance by first counting our steps (non-uniform units of measurement) and then using metre sticks(standard uniform units of measurement) as well as rulers, for the shorter distances within the classroom.
  • In phonics, we will be learning all about the ou and ow sound.  Children will practise segmenting and blending words with this sound as well as writing sentences with these words in.
  • During our afternoon topic sessions this week we are learning all about bees and the process of making honey.
  • Our literacy focus for the week will be Where the wild things are.

Summer 1 - Week 2

This week in Reception we will be learning the following:

  • In maths, we will be focussing on using our knowledge of number bonds to write subtraction number sentences.
  • In phonics, we will be learning all about the er sound.  Children will practise segmenting and blending words with this sound as well as writing sentences with these words in.
  • During our afternoon topic sessions this week we are learning all about butterflies and children are going to be welcoming some tiny little caterpillars into their classrooms on Wednesday afternoon, so that we can observe the life cycle up close and personal :)
  • Our literacy focus for the week will be Stick Man.

Summer Term - Week beginning 18th April.

Its a new term - welcome back!

We hope you all had a relaxing and happy Easter holiday :) A new term, a new topic(Minibeasts) and this saw children arriving today with the most creative art projects they had worked very hard on during the holiday break! Well done children, these minibeasts are going to help us to write some really good sentences, as well as turn our roleplay area into a fabulous minibeast laboratory.

This week in Reception we will be learning the following:

  • In maths, we will be focussing on learning our number bonds to 10 and then  to 20. Children will be writing these number bonds in addition number sentences.
  • In phonics, we will be learning all about the th sound. This is the 'loud' th sound. Children will practise segmenting and blending words with this sound as well as writing sentences with these words in.
  • Our half-termly topic is all about mini-beasts, and children have already had some fun examining mini-beasts in the classroom under microscopes.
  • Our literacy focus for the week will be Hey, Little Ant.Looking for minibeasts!

 

 

 Week 4 - Week Beginning 14th March 2016

 

It's science week!

 

This week in Reception we will be exploring and learning a number of new and exciting things.
·         In maths, we will be focusing on recognising the numeral and being able to apply with objects. This is also called the conservation of number; this youtube clip explains further https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RBvG-FG6hCE.
·         Phonics will concentrate on new sounds 'oi' e.g. oink, point, coin and 'oa' e.g. goat, float, moat, toast. Children will be applying their new knowledge in a range of activities this week.
·         In CIP (child initiated play), the focus will be on famous scientists. From Marie Curie to Albert Einstein, Woodpeckers will be learning about who they are and how they contributed to our society.
·         As it is science week, topic will focus on a range of science themes. Reception will be looking at habitats, life cycles, plants and many more!

Week 3 - Week Beginning 7th March 2016 

 

This week in Reception we will be exploring and learning a number of new and exciting things.
·         In maths, we will be focusing on more and less. Woodpeckers will be exploring one and two more/less than numbers 1-20. 

·         Phonics will concentrate on new sounds 'oo' e.g. look, book, took... and the 'ar' sound.

  • In CIP (child initiated play), the focus will be on our book First Fabulous Facts about Planet Earth (Ladybird). We will be investigating the world we live in, including how many countries there are, what languages we speak and about animals on this planet. 
·         During topic the children will be learning about how to look after our planet through recycling. 

 

Extra information: in the Curriculum area there is an Overview calendar informing what it is going to be investigated, explored and learnt during the term.

 

Reminder: On the Bug Club website there are lots of online books available for your use to develop and enjoy reading with your children. 

Spring Term

Week 2 

 

This week in Reception we will be exploring and learning a number of new and exciting things.
·         In maths, we will be focusing on data handling. We will ask our fellow Woodpeckers opinions and create tally charts and pictograms. 
·         Phonics will concentrate on new sounds 'oo' e.g. spoon, boot, moon. We will also look at the tricky words put and of. 
·         In CIP (child initiated play), the story focus will be The Naughty Bus by Jan Oke. This will work alongside our transport theme.
·         The children will be learning about road safety and transport in our local area during Topic.
Spring Term 1 - Week 4                           25 January to 30th January 2016

 

This week in Reception we will be exploring and learning a number of new and exciting things.

 

·         In maths, we will be focusing on the names and properties of 3D shapes. The four we will begin to look at are cylinder, cube, sphere and cone. The children will learn about these shapes in adult led and independent activities.

 

·         Phonics will concentrate on segmenting and blending words in a sentence. We will be using our sound buttons and beginning to read more.

 

·         In CIP (child initiated play), the story focus will be Billy Goats Gruff. The activities will revolve around retelling the story, building the bridges for the goats to cross and the role play area will be transformed into a forest.

 

·         The children will be learning about human growth in topic – from baby to old age. Reception will be looking at pictures of their teachers as toddlers and will explore the different ages in an interactive manner.
