British Values

British Values

Schools need “to create and enforce a clear and rigorous expectation on all schools to promote the fundamental British values of democracy, the rule of law, individual liberty and mutual respect and tolerance of those with different faiths and beliefs.” Department for Education.

At Lanchester Community Free School we promote British Values through a holistic curriculum, high expectations, and an environment which allows pupils to develop and demonstrate the skills and attitudes which equip them to contribute and participate in modern Britain.

Democracy

We have a Junior Leadership Team which is democratically elected. Student who would like to be part of this team, nominate themselves and present to the school body why they believe they would make a positive contribution to the Junior Leadership Team. Their peers them vote for the people they would like to represent them. The elected members of the Team meet regularly to work towards school improvement actions. Pupil voice surveys are conducted yearly, through hearing and responding to children’s voice the SLT and staff work towards  further improving our school.

The Rule of Law

The importance of laws are consistently and positively reinforced at Lanchester Community Free School. Pupils are taught and are expected to demonstrate understanding of class rules, playground rules and general safety rules of our school. We believe to have a full understanding of the school rules children need to be taught the value and reasons behind rules and laws- that they govern and protect us. Children are taught right from Reception the responsibilities that our school rules involve and the consequences when laws are broken. Visits from authorities such as the Police and Fire Services help reinforce this message.

Individual Liberty

Individual Liberty is central to the school vision, we value and respect the children and teach them to respect each other. We support and develop a safe environment which promotes and actively encourages children to make choices. We aim to provide empowering education where children understand their rights as individuals and their personal freedoms. Our values based curriculum is embedded through our day to day running of our school. Every class runs a Circle Time within their timetable which promotes PSHE and provides those skills which help our children to learn both individually and socially. Our staff display and demonstrate the skills and social interaction in which we aim to promote within our children- understanding different viewpoints an an open-mindedness and mutual respect to differences.

Mutual Respect

Respect is a core value taught at Lanchester CFS. The language related to respect and understanding of what it means to demonstrate respect is at the forefront of our teaching. Pupils have been part of discussions and assemblies related to what this means and how it is shown.

Tolerance of those of Different Faith and Beliefs

At Lanchester we celebrate the multitude of different cultures, faiths and beliefs in which make up our school and our community. This is achieved through enhancing pupils understanding of their place in a culturally diverse society and by giving them opportunities to experience such diversity. We allow, encourage children to discuss, ask questions and teach others about different faiths and beliefs. In addition to this we teach explicit RE lessons which furthermore develops an understanding and tolerance of those of different faiths and beliefs. Assemblies and discussions are followed and supported by learning in RE and PSHE. We use our Assemblies to learn about and celebrate different Religious Festivals and Celebrations. Celebrating and understanding diversity is embedded within our curriculum planning. We utilise the diversity of our school community and often have parents coming in to share their different cultures and religions with us. Children speak openly and freely about differences and show understanding and open-mindedness, not only are they displaying that they are well prepared for life in modern Britain, but that they are true Global Citizens.
